Getting out of bed in winter is a struggle, so give yourself an extra ten minutes in bed with these simple tips from Julia Dickenson, chief make-up artist and founder of Oradess, to get yourself looking (and feeling) good in 60 seconds.
Doing the groundwork saves time in the long run. If you take the time to set up a good beauty routine for yourself, then you'll be able to give your appearance a quick fix simply and easily, whenever you need it.
These five top tips will get your routine running smoothly in no time:
1. Tint your lashes
This is a foolproof way to make sure your peepers always look bright and alive.
2. Don't pick your face
Don't think this applies to you? You'd be surprised. Stop and think about how many times you touch your face throughout the day. Not only can squeezing or picking at skin blemishes cause pimples and other skin flare-ups, but touching your hands to your face can transfer oils and dirt to the sensitive skin of your face, upsetting the balance. Reducing the chance of a flare-up is a lot easier than trying to cover up unsightly blemishes.
3. Groom your eyebrows
If you keep your eyebrows well groomed, your battle's half won. I look at photographs all the time of people whose makeup looks great but with a little brow shaping it could be so much more striking. Try getting your eyebrows professionally shaped; you'll be amazed at the difference it makes.
4. Develop a good skin care routine
Try thinking of your skin as your canvas. In the same way that an artist is more likely to produce a masterpiece on a smooth and carefully primed surface rather than on a rough brick wall, taking care of your skin goes a long way to ensuring your overall look is fresh and well finished. Daily cleansing and moisturising are the basics, together with weekly exfoliation. And if you're not sure what's best for you, visit a reputable skin therapist to get some really good advice.
5. Be prepared
Make sure that the makeup you use is accessible and ready to go. This is also a great time to do an audit on your collection and get rid of any accumulated giveaways and mistakes that you have been stockpiling over the years. We take the time to clean out our fridges and spring clean our homes, but often neglect to give our makeup bags the same care and attention.
Colour correction
A quick slick of eyeshadow can really make your eyes pop and make all the difference to your looks. But which colours suit you best?
- Blue: blue, aqua, purple, brown, gold, peach
- Green: green, blue, purple, gold, plus, rose
- Brown: Brown, peach, copper, blue, plus, turquoise
Quick fix
Once you've set up your beauty routine groundwork, you'll find freshening your look in 60 seconds is a breeze. Just follow these simple steps:
1. Light covering of foundation - liquid or powder - 15 seconds
2. Brush you eyebrows through, add a little pencil for extra colour if needed - 10 seconds
3. Touch of blush on the apples of your cheeks - great for a healthy glow - 5 seconds
4. A light eye shadow colour and sweep it over the lid of the eye - 10 seconds
5. One coat of mascara over tinted lashes and watch your eyes light up - 10 seconds
6. Using a lipstick or a gloss with a wand will definitely save you time - 8 seconds
7. Blow yourself a kiss - 2 seconds
If it doesn't quite come together within 60 seconds on your first attempt, don't despair, you'll get there. With practice you'll even have time to get creative or blow yourself a longer kiss.
