Caring For Pets In The Heat

With a few hot days behind us, there is still some blistering hot weather ahead. And while summer means carefree fun for families, spare a thought for your furry friend.

“If we’re distressed by the heat, there’s a good chance your pup needs some attention too," says Debbie Harrison, founder of pet boutique BestDressedPets.com.au.

1. Cool down
The best way to protect your pet on a hot sunny day is to dress it up with cool bandanas, wet the bandanna and put around their neck.

2. Slip, slop, slap
Did you know that skin cancer is the most common cancer among dogs? Apply sunscreen (at least SPF 10) on noses and ears.

3. Avoid exercise between 10am and 4pm
Just like we know to avoid the sun during the hottest period of the day, you know keep exercise to a minimum, and avoid going between 10am and 4pm.

4. Splash time
Regularly cool your dog by pouring some water on their belly, chest, and paws. Portable, shallow splash pools can provide a nice relief from the heat.

5. Watch their paws
Think of how painful hot sand and pavements can be on bare feet. Now, think of what your pet has to deal with. Avoid taking them on pavements, rocky areas and beach sand as these surfaces heat quickly and can burn sensitive paws.

6. Extra water
This is important. Give your pet extra water throughout the day and keep their bowl full.

7. Provide shade
If your pet is an outdoor pet, ensure you have plenty of covered, shady places for them to rest.
