Hunger Games Movie Review

Oh look, there's Lenny Kravitz.

You don't expect to think that while watching The Hunger Games. But there he is, wearing gold eyeliner. And playing a stylist?

It's just one of the very weird things about this movie. Another is, why are there so many talented actors in it? There's Stanley Tucci sporting a blue rinse, and Donald Sutherland (albeit briefly, and he doesn't look like he wants to be there).

Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen does her best, and she's very cute - and kind of makes you want to take up archery - but the rest of the cast is cliched and wooden.

Now, I haven't read the book. But I'd heard enough to know what it's about, and the premise sounded interesting. A future where food is scarce and young people are selected to fight it out to the death with a reward of food has potential. However the movie is so dull and unbelievable that I wished I'd stayed home - and watched the original that it's based on, the cult Japanese flick from 2000, Battle Royale.

But my companion who had read and loved the book also thought the movie was average at best. I left feeling annoyed that I'd wasted my money on this film - and at 2 hours and 20 minutes - a huge piece of my day.
