Why Did Katie Holmes File For Divorce From Tom Cruise?

Last week, Tom Cruise was raving about life with Katie Holmes, telling People Magazine that his perfect day is "the time with Kate."

On Thursday, Holmes, 33, filed divorce papers in New York, and this weekend, was spotted moving out of their city apartment to a new home with daughter Suri, six.

Cruise, two days short of his 50th birthday, remains in Iceland filming his latest movie, Oblivion, releasing a statement that he is "deeply saddened" by her decision to divorce.

Signs that things weren't going well surfaced earlier in June when Holmes did not join Cruise on the red carpet for the Hollywood premiere of Rock of Ages, his biggest movie in years.

The couple have also been sleeping in separate bedrooms for weeks.

Holmes lawyer says her "primary concern" is Suri, with reports that she will seek full custody of their daughter.

While the full terms of their prenup were never made public, it is understood Holmes will receive $3 million for each year of their marriage, totalling $15 million, as well as a palatial home in California.

From their strange beginnings - who could forget Cruise jumping on Oprah's couch? - to their lavish wedding complete with Scientology ceremony in November 2006 in an Italian castle, the couple have always attracted curiosity over their relationship. While Holmes embraced Scientology, TMZ report that her reason for leaving Cruise is because she feared he would drag Suri deeper into the church.
