1. Check yourself before you binge. Ask yourself while you are eating outside of meal times "Am I still hungry?”. You’d be surprised how often the answer is no and yet you are still eating!
2. Have protein with every meal. Protein keeps hunger away longer than any other ingredient. Go for things like eggs, lean meat, nuts, legumes, beans, tuna and fish.
3. Don't party two days in a row. The day after a party binge is "payback day" where you either exercise yesterday's binge away or your food intake is predominantly lean protein and green vegetables.
4. Stick to wholemeal.Learn to live without products made from white flour (biscuits and cakes) because you’re only putting unwanted sugars in your body.
5. Try to limit alcohol intake. If you are going to drink beer, have low kilojoule beer like Hahn Super Dry or Pure Blonde. Even better, enjoy red wine in moderation because it’s full of antioxidants.
6. Don't deny your sweet tooth. But if you feel you must have sweets or pastries, try fruit salads with low fat custards/ice cream or raisin toast topped with low fat ricotta cinnamon and grated apple instead.
7. Remember portion control. Restaurants often serve large mains, so sharing is fine. If you eat slowly and savour your food, you’ll enjoy the experience more and it will help control your appetite.
8. Give yourself options. In the early stages of trying to overcome over indulgence, it’s better to have too many healthier options than fatty snacks. Have vegetable sticks with low fat tomato based dips as opposed to crackers and cheese.
9. Drink a lot of water - minimum 2 litres of waters (6-8 glasses) per day. Water is not only a hunger suppressant but it also flushes toxins out of the system keeping your kidney and liver healthy.
