According to Twinings, who hosts monthly High Teas in conjunction with the Park Hyatt Sydney and Park Hyatt Melbourne, there has been a steady increase in the concept of high tea since the prêt-a-portea series was introduced to the market and celebrities such as Kylie Minogue, Victoria Beckham and Madonna have shown their interest.
High teas will be held at the Park Hyatt Sydney on the 7 May, 11 June, 30 July, 20 August, 10 September, 15 October and 12 November. They will be held at the Park Hyatt Melbourne on 23 July and 8 October.*
“Traditionally, high tea was introduced as a light supper to combat hunger pains between lunch served at midday and dinner served at eight,” said Stephen Twining, tenth generation of the famous tea family. “Where afternoon tea focused on sweet treats, high tea includes sweet and savoury delights.”
“Today, high tea is much more than a mid-afternoon snack – it is an occasion in its own right. The perfect outing for a mother and daughter on Mothers Day or an excuse for the ladies to leave the children at home or get away from their desks for a quick catch up.
Other occasions to celebrate with high tea include kitchen teas, bridal showers or baby showers, particularly if the thought of games involving clothes pegs, nappies and washing lines make you cringe.
Modern high tea service at the Park Hyatt Sydney and Park Hyatt Melbourne includes a welcome glass of champagne, service of a dedicated tea blend such as Lady Grey, Traditional Afternoon or Green Tea, and a spread of pastries, scones and tea-inspired dishes.
To make the experience complete, the prêt-a-portea series also packages high tea service with a fashion parade from a different designer each month. Some of the world’s leading designers have committed to being part of the 2008 series, including Collette Dinnigan, Carla Zampatti, Escada and Kenzo.
This partnering gives the fashion-loving public the chance to experience first-hand the time-honoured ritual of high tea while viewing the best in catwalk shows and breaking fashion. For most people, this is the only chance they will get to see these iconic designs paraded up close and personal.
