When did you start your Business?
Jean: We started this company over 31 years ago.
Jane: It was originally called The Face Place.
What was your inspiration to start the business?
Jane: We were models in the 1970s, back in those days everyone did their own makeup.
Jean: Our big break came when we starred in a series of Calgon Bath Beads commercials. We took the money we earned from that job to start our business. We knew we couldn’t model forever!
Jane: We were great a makeup and we knew how to bake a great casserole. We flipped a coin to decide whether to open a makeup boutique or a casserole café.
Jean: Our doors opened in July 1976.
Best lessons learnt so far:
Jean: You build your destiny one day at a time.
Jane: When opportunity knocks, don’t complain about the noise.
Advice to others who want to start their own business?
Jane: Good often isn’t good enough. Go for great. Be ready to work hard…really hard.
Jean: Don’t take no for an answer. Add a “w” to no and turn it into now. Don’t give up.
Mentors or people you have learnt from?
Jean: Our mom. She is our inspiration. She taught us to go for it.
Jane: Our mother encouraged us to try everything. She also taught us the importance of good manners and a smile. She always says, “Let a smile be our umbrella.”
How would you describe your personal style?
Jane: Eclectic, slightly tailored, fashion-forward with an element of surprise.
Jean: Layered, West Coast chic mixed with a little bit of funk.
5 Must-haves this year?
Jane: A beautiful sarong, brightly colored shift dress, a comfy pair of ballet flats, big antique earrings, my favourite bad gal lash.
Jean: A big shady floppy hat, a pair of chic tortoiseshell sunglasses, a long colourful print dress, gold bangles, my new obsession - erase paste.
