Angelina Jolie's youngest daughter Vivienne Marcheline, 14 months, has been spotted out with pierced ears! What do you think about piercing children's ears? When is too young?

I personally think that they should be old enough to ask for them at least. But I'm in my late 20s and still have not had mine pierced so what do I know?!

Piercing childrens ears goes way back. I personally think it looks nice on little girls. However when it comes to any other piecings I think they girl should be old enough to ask for it and old enough to handle it.

Have to admit it is pretty common. I guess the younger they are, the less likely they are to remember the pain... and I suppose if they don't want to wear earrings anymore, they can remove them.

I got my daughters ears pierced when she was 6 months. I did it for 2 reasons.
The first being that she wouldn't be able to remember the pain, and secondly because she is too young to fiddle with them and get germs in them, lessening the chance of infection.
So far so good, she still goes back to that hairdresser without fear, and she has never had an infection and she doesnt fiddle with them.
I was 13 when I first had mine done...and I remember the pain, and the 3 ear infections, and stupidly letting them close over and then getting them re-pierced again.
I think they look beautiful too, but I have seen mothers go over the top and get more than 1 piercing in each lobe, which I think should be more of a choice of the little girl when she is old enough.

Agree with tommygirl about infection. Also, the younger you are, the less likely for enormous scar tissue to form. My ears still have scar tissue.. haven't worn earrings in 5 years, and got it pierced 10 years ago. Still lumpy with scar tissue though.

My parents did mine when I was 11 months old. I was actually quite glad because when all my friends were asking to get their ears pierced (and complaining about the resulting pain) I'd already had mine done!

I did have more piercings done at ages 10 and 11 (that I asked for) but fyi, the pain was still minimal.

My mother got my ears pierced at the doctor when I was 12 months. I'm not sure if doctors still pierce ears, but apparently it was done with numbing cream and a needle.

I think one set is fine for little girls, considering it's the norm and most girls get it done, but anything more should be left until the girl is older.

totally agree, and the younger they are the less chance of infection as they wont play around with them and try to pull them out!!

Hmmmm yeah I am conflicted on this one.... in one way if a mother gets her daughters ears pierced at an extremely young age, I dont see how she can object to the daughter getting any other piercings at any age? Which I bet they would, sounds like a double edged sword.

I wouldnt do it unless my child wanted it, I think inflicting pain on any child for the sake of looking good is scraping the bottom of the barrel. We are born beautiful!

I got my ears pierced when I was 13 and really... it didnt hurt and I didn't get an infection. I had mine done at a pharmacy and they gave me antiseptic solution. I think that is the most important thing to keep up with, for at least a few weeks after having it done.

Thought you should all know that I got my ears pierced, finally! It's for my wedding so I can wear my grandmother's diamond earrings. All together now ... awwwww.

Didn't hurt THAT much

That is such a lovely gesture.
Infection is more troublesome as an adult, however, I found the most awkward part being the way I slept during the night. Such a beautiful thing to do though Mel!!!

MY Mum did mine when I was very young with ice and sewing needle, I guess we couldn't afford to get it done professionally. I just hope Ange doesn't try any home Tattoo's!

My daughter was five, when SHE asked for them.

My opinion is just like circumsicion I don't have the right to change a persons body forever. Just saying
